Step back in time and discover the fascinating heritage of Alexandria, a city shaped by Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians alike. From ancient monuments to remarkable archaeological treasures, this full-day excursion from Cairo offers an unforgettable journey through one of Egypt’s most historic destinations.
Your day begins with an early morning departure from Cairo at 6:30 AM, heading north to Alexandria, Egypt’s legendary Mediterranean city.
Upon arrival, your exploration starts at the impressive Qaitbay Citadel, a 15th-century fortress built by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Following a series of devastating earthquakes, stones from the fallen lighthouse were incorporated into the construction of the citadel, creating a remarkable link between Alexandria’s ancient and medieval history.
Next, continue to the fascinating Kom El Shoqafa Catacombs, one of Alexandria’s most important archaeological sites. These underground tombs beautifully illustrate the blend of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artistic traditions. Explore the network of passages, chambers, and galleries spread across three levels of the necropolis.
Nearby stands the famous Pompey’s Pillar, a towering Roman monument located on the site where the Temple of Serapis once stood, dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian deity Serapis.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in the heart of Alexandria, featuring a selection of fresh fish and seafood rice, offering an authentic taste of the Mediterranean coast.
In the afternoon, visit one of Alexandria’s most iconic modern landmarks—the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (New Alexandria Library). Built as a tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria, once the greatest center of learning in the ancient world, this architectural masterpiece was inaugurated in 2002 and continues the city’s legacy as a hub of culture, scholarship, and knowledge.
The library houses extensive collections, museums, exhibitions, and cultural centers, making it one of the most significant intellectual institutions in the Mediterranean region.
After a day filled with history, culture, and discovery, relax on the drive back to Cairo, arriving at your hotel approximately 12 hours after departure.
If your tour takes place on one of these days, the library visit will be replaced by a visit to the historic Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque and the Alexandria Corniche.
Official guided tours inside the Bibliotheca Alexandrina are available in:
